I sold my S4 this weekend
and picked up a 2015 Tacoma. I'm sure I'll miss the avant from time to time but the Taco can do so much more

Did you compare it to the Colorado/Canyon at all? Nice vehicle regardless, I like the Taco quite a bit.

I did look in to the Colorado some and it actually seemed like the better truck on paper. However, I couldn't plop down $30k for a 1st gen GM product, that and I don't like the way they look compared to the Taco.

Thanks! Already has a ski day and Lowe's trip under it's belt after 3 days.

How does it drive? I mean, I get it is a truck and won't drive like a sportscar.
Will it baby? Think it would hold 2 car seats?
I can't tell from the pic which bed length that is — did you compare bed lengths? Why did you go with that one?
Did you check out the options? If so, what options are worth it / which aren't & why? I know I would get 4dr 4x4 trd offroad (which is exactly what it looks like yours is).
I'm asking because I may end up buying a Taco 4dr in the next 6 months. I have a toddler and expecting a baby, so... need to know the important stuff! Hah.

I totally understand not dropping the cash on a fort gen GM product, my parents got burned by the first year/gen Envoy. Nice vehicle but ours had so many issues, it was nearly a lemon. I do like the Taco's looks a bit more, both look pretty good regardless.

It drives like a truck although it is smoother than I expected actually. Definitely nice to drive. A LOT less wind noise than I would have expected.
Part of the reason I got it was due to the fact the S4, despite being an avant, barely fit the car seat we have for our daughter. When I say barely that meant the front seat had to be all the way forward to get in there, all good if the front passenger is Lt. Dan. The Taco has the LATCH system to mount the base and will def fit 2 back there.
Mine has the short bed (5ft). Bed length wan't a determining factor for me. If you want the long bed you'll have to get a base trim or the Sport trim. The Off Road package only comes with the short bed. The only thing I saw myself doing with the longer bed was helping people move, so again, a non-factor in my decision. Along with the short bed mine has the locking rear differential as part of the OR pack, that option not available on the Sports. I have the towing package (added supplemental trans oil cooler) which is available on the Sport or OR.
As far as appearance, the OR pack has the chrome trimmed front grille and rear bumper where the Sport has those items color keyed. The OR also has 16" wheels to the Sport's 17s, tire replacement should be cheaper on the 16s. I could take or leave the non-functional hood scoop, but if you like it you have to get a Sport or TRD Pro (~$6k more than OR or Sport). The only cool thing I've seen with the scoop is a light bar set up that fits in there. Sport also has color keyed side mirrors instead of black. As far as to which options are worth it to you is up to you to decide. For me it was the Blue Ribbon Metallic or nothing and I wanted to locking diff so OR it was.
Interior wise, either package has basically the same stuff available. I have the etune with JBL speakers, sat radio (XM is f'ing nice), back up cam and nav. I did 4 hours in it on Saturday and the seats were nice enough, no issues there for me. Resale value on them here in CO is insane as well. There were CPO Tacos sitting on the dealer lot with 25-40k on them that were marked for more than what I paid for mine with 100 miles. I thought it was pretty telling that I see a huge amount of Tacomas on the road but can not recall ever seeing a single commercial for them, they sell themselves. For good reason imo. Hope all that helps!

For sure, 5 years down the road will tell us most of what we need to know on the Canyorados but I didn't want to be burned by an untested set up. The Taco may be a bit underpowered at 240hp but they are pretty tried and true at this point in the 2nd gen's life. To be fair, I could have waited for the 3rd gen next year but don't want to be part of that test group on a new drivetrain either.

Those wheels look gorgeous on your S4.

Thanks! Great response. Assuming you got a manual (this is jalop after all), how is it?
Good to know re: car seats. I'm about to have 2 in car seats.
Also good to know re: locking diff. I too would want that so I guess I would stick with short bed & OR package (or Pro, but $6k is a lot of cheddar for a package). I have liked JBL in other Toyotas, so I would probably want that too.
Yeah, I hear you on resale & selling themselves. One reason I am considering it is that I think a Tacoma would hold up better than the competition if I kept it or resale higher if I didn't.

Actually everything I read says the auto was the better trans for these, that's what I've got. Also towing pack is auto only as well. I'll be back in a car with a man trans in a few years I'm sure. Something I can track and not dd, preferably a 911 of some sort.
The TRD Pro is a mish mash of the OR and Sport, meaning you get the scoop and color matched grille/bumper/mirrors from the Sport along with the locking diff and short bed of the OR pack. With that you also get special 16" wheels (I'm already looking for a set for mine), a 2" lift from the factory (might do a lift but undecided on which parts), the TRD exhaust (undecided on anything there) and blacked out badges (meh). Also only comes in black, white or Inferno red. The inferno is a cool color but I don't know if I could live with it day to day and black or white was a no go.

I'm gonna use Canyorado, that's rad haha. The Taco is for sure tried and true, I have considered a used one but a truck is not what I need right now. Plus if power is a real problem for anyone there's a ton of things a person can do I'd assume.

Whoa. I never thought you would ever sell the S4.

Me too, but the worrying about shit breaking got to me. I could never fully enjoy it. It was a tiptronic so that helped aid the decision as well, a 6spd would have stayed with me forever.

oh yeah, I didn't know you had a tip. That's like the cost of maintaining two 2.7T's at once.

I have to say it, manual gearboxes in trucks are pointless and overrated.

And a 1.8t just for good measures.
